Cake & Death Discussion
Cake & Death is a monthly discussion on human mortality. Each month we enter into a variety of conversations on this delicate and somewhat challenging subject in a safe and welcoming environment…and there’s cake from Rabbit Hole Bakery!
This month’s Cake & Death discussion will start with a comparison of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos. These holidays share some of their origin with one another and recall the “thinning of the veil,” but differ greatly in meaning and practice. The last day of October, corresponding with the end of harvest and shedding of leaves, signifies an ancient notion of “the world of the living” being closer to “the world of the dead” than at any other time throughout the year. Trick or treat, snacks and parties in cemeteries, the differences, the similarities, and the take-aways will be the launching pad for our talk. Finding death spooky? Campy? Festive? Reverent? Or is there room for “all of the above?”
